August 6, 1945 – The Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the first of two such strikes that ended World War II. What many people do not know is that 7 Army Air Forces and 2 Naval Aviators were among the casualties. The following nine men were Prisoners of War, being held at Hiroshima on the day of the bombing. All were either killed in the blast or subsequently died of radiation poisoning: Staff Sergeant Charles O. Baumgartner – USAAF Second Lieutenant Durden Looper – USAAF Second Lieutenant James M. Ryan – USAAF Sergeant Hugh H. Atkinson – USAAF Corporal John A. Long, Jr. – USAAF Staff Sergeant Buford J. Ellison – USAAF Staff Sergeant Ralph J. Neal – USAAF Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Raymond G. Porter – USN Aviation Radioman Third Class Normand Roland Brissette - USN
