August 8 – Friends Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 26:20-27:34 / 1 Cor. 4:1-21 / Proverbs 19:13-32 Can you name your local state representatives, school board members, or US senators? We might be able to name some of them but there are far more people in prominent positions that we can’t name or do not know. Chronicles lists leaders who were temple officials, tribe officers, king overseers and army commanders. They were important to the development, health and security of the kingdom. There are some in this world that desire powerful leadership positions and the popularity that comes with their office. The reality is that positions of leadership aren’t as glamorous, exciting and powerful as one would think. There is a large amount of responsibility and accountability in leadership. There is one name and leadership position listed in 1 Chronicles that I would like to have. It is not a temple, army or governmental position but one that Hushai the Arkite held. He wasn’t in charge of the king’s provisions, land or treasury but it says, “Hushai the Arkite was the king’s friend.” (1 Chron. 27:33) What a great position! Hushai’s responsibilities required him to be available to spend time with the king. He was to be trustworthy, caring and supporting. He was to be one in whom the king could confide and also share with the king his own personal thoughts and feelings. It was a close relationship with no walls of deception or facades of hypocrisy. Friends defended, supported and had great faith in one another. Hushai was king David’s friend and we are called to be the friend of another King…Jesus! Jesus had announced to the disciples that He had called them servants but said, “I no longer call your servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15) Because of Christ’s sacrificial death for us and according to His own words, He considers us His friends; “Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) Jesus established a relationship with us…a friendship of the closest kind. He is a friend who cares, encourages, strengthens and desires to spend time with us. The songwriter was right…What A Friend We Have In Jesus!
