August 9, 1173: Construction begins on the Tower of Pisa and takes 200 years to complete. As the tower reached the second floor in 1178, it began to sink due to an unstable foundation in weak soil. Construction was halted as the Republic of Pisa was in many battles and resumed in 1272 with plans to build one side taller than the other to composite for the lean. The seventh floor was completed in 1319 and the bell tower in 1372.
