August Wilson Monologue Competition - High School The August Wilson Red Door Project is now accepting applications for the August Wilson Monologue Competition! High School students grades 10, 11 and 12 are invited to apply. Who is August Wilson? An American playwright who wrote a series of ten plays known as The Pittsburgh Cycle that storied the African-American experience of the 20th century, one play for each decade. These award winning plays are a significant body of literature upon which this competition is based. What is the August Wilson Monologue Competition? Part of a National Competition in 7 Major Cities, this is Portland’s inaugural year and we aim to make a strong showing. Through Wilson’s plays, high school actors will learn about the American experience from the African-American viewpoint. With structured support participants will select a monologue and prepare to perform it at publicly viewed Portland auditions. The top three finalists will compete in national finals held at the August Wilson Theater in New York City in May 2014!
