August is National Back-to-School Month. As both a parent and a public servant, I want to be sure our kids, our teachers and our schools have the tools and resources they need. Everyone should have a chance -- an opportunity -- to become a productive member of our society, and education is the path into the middle class and beyond. It’s the foundation on which progress is built. Without education, Americans wouldnt have landed on the moon. Without education, we wouldnt have medical doctors, engineers, attorneys. Let’s help our kids, whatever age, settle into their first semester of elementary or middle or high school or college. I’ll continue to work hard to ensure that education remains a path thats available to all. We must also work on keeping our young ones engaged in science, technology, engineering and math – STEM. These are the fields of the future. In the 23rd District of Texas we have some amazing teachers and professors, paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, support personnel and administrators. Fueled by education and a sheer determination for example, a rocketry team from Presidio, Texas, propelled itself to be the 4th best team in the entire nation. Anything is possible. Teachers work hard to find creative ways to engage students and encourage a love of learning. Let’s continue to support them and their work. They are our beacons of hope and our path to the future. Thomas Jefferson said it best: “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” Lets all learn as much as we can and enjoy the school year.
