August is the new September Last Friday, August officially - TopicsExpress

August is the new September Last Friday, August officially arrived. This Monday it really began. And now you know why it’s the new September. This past weekend, the “Sales Tax Holiday” went into effect for new clothes and school supplies. Everywhere, frenzied mothers dragged their children to the shopping mall. Some even returned early from vacation so as to not miss this annual event. (ed. note: would you return from vacation early for a retail sale promising “6%” off? Neither would I. And that’s why this is such a lame public policy. But I digress) On Monday, every single high school in northern Virginia — and perhaps the world — began pre-season practices for fall sports. My oldest daughter plays field hockey for Fairfax High School. Like all schools, they begin with “two-a-day” practices, which means that they’re at practice at 7 a.m., home for lunch, then back in the evening. Meanwhile, youth sports are not to be left behind. FPYC travel soccer and football have both begun their pre-season practices, which for August means practice EVERY DAY. So my son is fully occupied — which is probably a good thing. No more Minecraft! While school itself doesn’t begin until September 2nd, new students in FCPS have begun their orientation. My second daughter is at Sidney Lanier Middle School every day this week to learn to be a seventh grader. (In my day, you just showed up on The First Day of School and the 8th graders told you what to do.) And, of course, teachers are already back in the buildings, preparing for the new year to begin. With all the snow days last year, it seems like the extended school year didn’t even end until July Fourth. (Thanks a lot Ryan McElveen!) Which means that summer vacation was, like, officially ONE DAY LONG! Okay, I’m exaggerating. Even politics is getting in on the act. On August 19, there will be special elections to fill a number of vacant House and Senate seats, which means that fundraising and canvassing is going full throttle. In fact, I’ll be doing some campaigning this weekend. Can’t wait until September comes around so we can all take a break.
