Australia donates to SIDS By Tupuola Terry Tavita Australia’s contribution to Samoa’s hosting of the SIDS conference was officially handed over this afternoon, at a ceremony at the Faleata Sports complex, They include; • the Police Service Logistics Support Center at Tuanaimato at a cost of $650,000 tala, • Security equipment worth $2 million tala, • Radio equipment worth $200,000, • Ten police motorbikes and five Police vehicles, • Australia also provided training for security and motorcades. Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi expounded on Australia’s continuing assistance to Samoa in education, special needs education, public sector reform programmes, justice and law enforcement, police work and health especially through the rural vaccinations programme. “Australia continues to be an important development partner of Samoa through its expansive assistance in a range of sectors,” said the Prime Minister, “we are indeed very grateful and appreciative for this assistance presented today.” Speaking on behalf of the Australian government, Australian High Commissioner Her Excellency Ms Sue Langford said she is convinced the assistance is in safe and capable hands with the Samoan Police. “This assistance will assist Samoa long after SIDS is finished,” she said. “It is a long-term assistance in the part of Australia that will benefit the whole country for years to come.” The equipment include a radio systems, cctv cameras, floodlights, badging equipment, x-ray security systems, scanners, etc.
