Australia has signed an MOU with Myanmar. In Greg Sheridans article on this MOU published in The Australian today the story of the persecuted Rohingya is barely touched upon. So here are a few background facts: * since 15 October 2014 reportedly 10,000 Rohingya people have fled * 140,000 are internally displaced * 100,000 have fled since 2012. Though technically this isnt state-sanctioned violence various reports state that it isnt prosecuted, discouraged, and government is said to do its fair share of hate mongering. Though the government seems keen to show its transition to democracy, what hope can there be if key people like U Khin Yi, the Minister for Immigration and Population in the Myanmar government – the subject of much of Sheridans article – objects even to the use of the term Rohingya?
