Australia two steps closer to Youth Olympic podium Lausanne (SUI) - Monday, February 17, 2014 Jacob BLACKBURN and Jessica SUTTON won Australia both quota spots for Nanjing 2014 at Oceania’s qualifying tournament on 15/16 February. BLACKBURN posted an Australian recurve cadet men’s record of 654, before beating Samoa’s Joshua WALKER 6-0 to claim his spot in the final. Jeremy HOLLIS (NZL) levelled that match at 5-all, but couldn’t beat Jacob BLACKBURN’s X – so surrendered the medal and quota spot. The recurve cadet women’s final was not so close. Jessica SUTTON cruised to a 6-nil victory over Hannah HAWLEY (NZL) to win Australia the place for Nanjing. Third-finishing Luisa TATAFU from Tonga shot a personal best of 554 for the ranking round. Benjamin NOTT placed highest for Australia four years ago at the previous Youth Olympics in Singapore. A member of the last eight recurve men left in the competition, he lost out in a fifth set to eventual bronze medallist Rick VAN DEN OEVER (NED). Continental Quota Tournaments (CQTs) for Africa and Europe are scheduled over the next three months, after which any unused spots will be allocated.
