Australian Junior Country Cup 2014 Basketball Tasmania is pleased to announce that Tasmania will be once again be competing at the Australian Junior Country Cup in January 2014, held in Albury/Wodonga NSW. In 2010 and for the first time, the Tasmanian State Development Program (SDP) formerly the NITP competed at the Australian Country Cup, held in Albury/Wodonga, NSW. This is an important development event on our calendar and this opportunity is now open to all eligible participants who reside in Tasmania. The standard at the tournament is National Championship level and our involvement in this tournament is to expose Tasmanian athletes to the level of play they will encounter at National Championships. This is a critical development experience in preparation for National Championships. This tournament caters for Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 female and male teams. We will enter teams as follows: U14 Boys and Girls - athletes born in 2001 and 2002. U16 Boys and Girls " athletes born in 1999 and 2000. U18 Boys and Girls " athletes born in 1997 and 1998. This equates to 100 athletes competing from Tasmania and will be paramount to help further develop our athletes against much tougher competition than what we can provide within Tasmania. The philosophy of our involvement in the tournament is purely of a developmental mindset. This means that every athlete that is invited to be a part of the team will get the opportunity to play. All athletes should not take this as a given as it is still imperative for athletes to strive for their best. If the team has success through the week and makes finals, rotations will be tightened then and the best performers of the week will share the majority of the court time. The tournament will also be used to teach athletes how to be an elite level athlete. Athletes will operate throughout the week as if they were participating at one of the U16/U18/U20 National Championships. Newly appointed and highly credentialed BTAS Basketball Development Officer, Mark Radford, will be the overall Head Coach for this tour. A series of other credentialed coaches and assistants or managers will be appointed soon. Athletes will also be involved in: Recovery sessions Maintaining their bodies to perform at optimum levels (rest in between games) Where possible teams will train on game days, as they would at normal National Championships. This is another critical step in assisting our athletes understand what it takes to be a state team athlete, with the goal of having them as prepared as possible, hoping for the best chance of success as they go through the program. TOURNAMENT DATES: The tournament dates are still to be confirmed however will be approximately Sunday 12 January to Sunday 19 January 2014, in Albury, NSW.
