Ava or the New Born Screen Testing Center gave us a good scare on her new born screening test. I guess it shouldnt be a scare - an awareness of a possible metabolic situation Ava might have had. After two additional screenings, we are happy to report that Ava has been cleared of Gluteric Acidemia Type 1. Which is a rare, but a real manageable metabolic situation to have. There are many babies out there who are not as fortunate to be cleared to eat protein, but live their lives with special diets and things to work around it. My family became Vegan for the last month:) New Born Screenings are very important for saving new born lives as I have learned first hand at identifying infants that need to be treated as soon as possible to keep their lives as normal as possible. We invite everyone to take a minute to understand what a new born screening is for at: dshs.state.tx.us/lab/newbornscreening.shtm and become an advocate of it. Even though there may have been a mix up in screenings, NBS saves lives:) Prior to all this, I was completely uneducated about what these screenings are for and what they do. I want to take this opportunity to help these strong people who work around these metabolic situations.
