Avoid That Call While Driving, FRSC Warns Agency Report — March 22, 2014 Mr Osita Chidoka, the Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has reissued the warning that any motorists caught with cell phone while driving would be prosecuted. He restated the warning at the monthly jogging of the commission on Saturday in Abuja, noting that the use of cell phone while driving had caused many road traffic accidents. Chidoka assured the public that the commission would intensify its enforcement against the use of cell phone during driving. “The use of phone while driving is dangerous to the motorist and other road users, avoid it,’’ he warned. In her remarks, the Director-General of Consumer Protection Council, Mrs Modupe Atoki, observed that reports had shown that the use of cell phones by motorists while driving had resulted in avoidable accidents, deaths and injuries. “Many Nigerians have died and suffered avoidable injuries arising from the recklessness of motorists who make use of their phones while driving,’’ she said. Represented in the exercise by an official of the council, Mr Emmanuel Almai, Atoki said in spite of the positive roles of cell phone, it had also become a source of pain to others. “It is instructive that the FRSC is using this opportunity to bring to the fore another angle of the mobile phone challenge. “It is, therefore, commendable that the FRSC has continued to undertake different forms of campaign to check this act of recklessness,’’ Atoki said. She appealed to cell phone users, especially motorists, to be responsible and ensure that the use did not contribute to any situation that degraded human values. The theme of the exercise, which was the first edition in 2014 is: “Avoid that call while driving.’’ (NAN)
