Avoidance. We are pretty good at not doing stuff arent we? Most of the time it is because the task will be too involved and we dont want to spend the time on it right now. But sometimes we avoid doing things because we honestly dont know how to handle the situation and are afraid of how it will turn out—even when we know we need to do something. It is comforting to know that God sees this tendency in us. Throughout scripture he consistently pushes people very much like you and me to step out in faith and do what is right. Yet, we are still hesitant, arent we? Samuel, one of the greatest and most powerful prophets of the Old Testament ran into that, even in his old age when most people were afraid of him. But God put his mind at ease: The Lord said to Samuel, How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with olive oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons. Samuel replied, How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me! But the Lord said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you should do. You will anoint for me the one I point out to you. 1Samuel 15:1-3 [NET] I will show you what you should do… It was that simple. God reassuring Samuel, just as he had Moses, and just as Jesus would tell his disciples years later. The Holy Spirit will guide you in what to say. He has done it over and over again. Here is another avoidance tactic: But those guys were great Bible characters! Im a nobody. Guess what? The reason they are great Bible characters is because when they were nobodies they were willing to step out, do something that was bigger than themselves and trust God to give them the right stuff. So trust him to give you what you need and take on that task that is in front of you.
