BACK TO THE BASICS: Over the past few months weve been focusing on passing along information regarding the new SHRM professional credentialing assessment that will be offered starting in 2015. However, its important to get back to the basics and continue to emphasize the importance of making the commitment to pursue your professional credentials. I have spoken with many other professionals in the industry and have encouraged them to take the first step in taking their career to the next level. A recurring theme seems to be lack of time in their schedules. Theres no doubt that we all have obstacles in our lives that have been holding us back from being able to accomplish all of the things we hope to. And, of course, there is no doubt that there is a time commitment involved with being able to prepare yourself to sit in on one of the exams. Im here to tell you that the time is now! Take a look at your calendar over the next 6 months. Research to see what preparation courses are offered in your local area (or online) and coordinate this in conjunction with the next exam window. Take advantage of any reimbursements that your company may offer and if there is no written policy, it certainly cant hurt to ask if they are able to cover the expense. My Mother always told me the worst they can say is no. If you have reservations due to financial reasons and having to out-of-pocket this on your own, come up with a game plan to be able to save for the future. For example, if the exam costs $250, spread out a savings plan over the next 12 months to allocate just over $20 a month into an account intended for this purpose. That way it doesnt feel so overwhelming all at once. Also, be on the lookout over the coming months with further information about scholarship opportunities offered by NKYSHRM. You never know, you could be the lucky winner!
