BACKGROUND: A newly arrived Pakistani immigrant became sick with a life-threatening blood disorder ITP (immune thrombocytopenic purpura) did not know whom to turn to. Her experience became the model for structuring direct services and support to recent immigrant families with needs in a changed cultural environment. After her recovery, Naila Alam with the support of her husband Mohammad Alam and sister Yasmeen Durrani established Express Care to facilitate immigrants’ understanding of the newly adapted country. WHAT IS EXPRESS CARE: A non profit organization with a 501(c)3 founded in 2003. EXPRESS CARE LOCATION: Office is housed at Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center. We serve the communities in Washington Metro Area. WHAT WE PROVIDE: Training and Job Placement: • Personal Care Assistant Certification (Authorized by Department of Medical Assistance Services, Richmond, VA) • Job placements, job search, resume writing and job readiness • CPR and First Aid Food Pantry: Distribute groceries to families in emergency situation such as single moms/widows, newly arrived immigrants, low income and home-bound. Social Services: Express Care delivers effective cultural sensitive and language appropriate services to the undeserved community. Referral services are provided for local agencies such as: 1. WIC 2. TANEF 3. Skill Source 4. Reston Interfaith 5. HealthWorks 6. Loudoun and Fairfax County Health Services
