BAD RAP: Norovirus on cruise ships account for tiny percentage 05 JUN 2014: Though cruise ships get the big splash of negative publicity for outbreaks of norovirus, it turns out ships’ passengers only account for about one percent of cases each year. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), say that the place youre most likely to contract the virus is from the food and restaurant industry. Apparently about 70 percent of outbreaks are caused by people who handle food, but who fail to wash their hands properly, and it is most likely spread by infected people. Norovirus is the most common cause of food poisoning, infecting about 20 million people every year. The study found 90 percent of norovirus contamination happens during the food preparation process, and about 75 percent of cases are linked to consuming raw food. The CDC said that food industry workers who show symptoms of norovirus such as vomiting and diarrhea should be required to stay home. However, up to 20 reported for work, many saying they were afraid for their jobs if they did not show up. CDC officials called for the food and restaurant industry to make changes by instituting more robust hygiene rules and better paid sick leave procedures for workers involved in food preparation. Workers must be able to stay home for two days after the symptoms subside to prevent infecting others. A total of 1,008 outbreaks of norovirus occurred in 43 US states between 2009 and 2012.
