BAHRAIN MAY SCRAP CURRENT JOBS QUOTA SYSTEMS FOR WORKERS IN THE COUNTRY July 8th, 2013 Bahrain may look to scrap its existing quota system for private sector employee numbers in return for a reformed system. The Kingdom currently has a system whereby private sector employees are only eligible for certain benefits once they recruit a certain percentage of Bahraini workers, but Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan said that this will be adapted to one which focuses on the quality of jobs for nationals. According to Gulf Daily News, Humaidan told a press conference held after a weekly cabinet meeting that "we have conducted a study on the current Bahrainisation system and discussed its angles with authorities concerned to seek ways for improvement". "A gap was found between jobs offered by employers which do not match what is sought by job seekers, and this was identified as an important problem with the current system." He said that certain managerial or professional roles will be counted as an equivalent to two or three regular jobs , but if there are sectors that are still failing to meet their quotas for Bahrainisation these may be "re-evaluated". "With this system, we can solve the gap found between demanded jobs and those offered in the market," he said. He added that the cabinet had approved the proposed changes and told the ministry to fast-track moves to implement them.
