BANGSA IRANUN / IRANUN TRIBE History of Bangsa Iranun Introduction: The Iranun a major etho-linguistic group originally living around and closely identified with Illana / Bay / Moro Gulf (Spanish corrupted term for Iranun or Illanun) bay and professing Islamic faith, has long been existing within Davao City and its immediate environs even before the Spaniards. Iranun also occupied some substantial portion of historic places in Sulu, Palawan, Sabah, Brunei and other parts of the Malay world. This peace loving and law abiding people were earning Livelihood before in Davao areas through lawful means such as farming, fishing, trading and other lawful callings and are now mostly in trade, entrepreneurial and employment professions both private and government, just like their Maranao brethren. Going on the concrete meaning and more understanding, the origin of Iranun. Iranun – Derived from two words – Ira means residue remains or silt. Refer to a place, area or the culture. Nun means the people therein, with distinct culture laws and belief. Combining Together – IRANUN means, the people remained in their own places/area and preserved their culture. To shorten, they are the people who are conservative in terms of their culture, tradition and belief. It implies that this people were the only remained, who were not adopt the colonial mission of many foreigners. They never give up in depending their nation. Thus, until now there are many grandparents of Iranun do not accept Filipino as their citizen, since Filipino was colonial term, taken in the name of King Philip II of Spain. According to them, we are territorially under Philippines but we are not Filipino. They were untiring defended their homeland from many conquerors. These was the reason why Spaniards called them Moro, the pirates, the warriors, since they engaged war against them to depend their nation. The Spaniards, defeated the war against people of Moroco, which look like the Iranun of Mindanao and possessed similar war techniques. What is true is Iranun is jealous of its territory. They do not allow foreigners to enter within their kingdom. Iranun is the oldest tribe in the Philippines, found wherever in the country, during ancient time. Nowadays, they are the majority tribe of Central Mindanao, particularly Cotabato City, Province of Maguindanao, North Cotabato, some in Lanao Provinces, Zamboanga Provinces, Davao Provinces, Sultn Kudarat Province, Bukidnon and many more. Iranun – were the people met by all Philippine envaders specifically the Spaniards, wherein they called them Moro / Illanun to replace Iranun, since they look like the people of Moroco (Mores) whom they were defeated and possesses similar techniques in war. Evidence is the Moro Gulf, wherein they corrupted the term, Iranun Bay. This is the portion of sea from Zamboanga to Cotabato down to Tagalook or Davao Gulf. But until now still popular as Illana Bay / Illanun Bay. During ancient time, this was Iranun Bay. Iranun as leader of the Philippines during ancient time. Everybody believed that our forefather were Muslims like Raja Solaiman of Luzon, Datu Puti, Datu Sumakwel, Datu Marikodo and even Lapu-Lapu. It is because Islam came in Philippines during 11th Century and Islamized the nation. History tell us Raja Solaiman and other datus of Luzon, Visayas, are not belong to the present popular tribes not Ilongo nor Visaya or Maguindanaon, neither Tagalog, but basing on the history both written and oral, they are all Iranun/Illanun, considering during ancient period Iranun was the tribe in the country. It was all considered as one of theoldest state in the world. Different datus were established government, like Raja Solaiman of Luzon, Datu Sumakwel , Datu Marikodo in Visayas, Raja Uranguwan in Mindanao, Later Sultan Kiram of Julo, Amay Pakpak of Lanao and Sultan Kudarat of Cotabato. According to Datu Pamikirin Dipatuan Arumpac Ayunandatu Sr. The second generation of ruler of Central Mindanao, one of the son of Sultan Kudarat assigned to Davao region as ruler. Datu Bago of Davao were his sibling. They were the one who Islamize the people of Davao. Another basis were Datu Mosa Amerol was the first Muslim Migrants from Central Mindanao who landed in Sirawan Davao in 1910 whom he produced many siblings. Musa Family of Davao region are from Iranun Tribe. It was narrated by Datu Cali Pagalungan Tuan Baracat, that Kagan and Iranun are very close relative. The son of Sultan Kudarat enter marriage to a Kagan the tribe of Davao. Their forefather was an Iranun and foremother was Kagan. There are many basis can be consider that Davao was predominantly inhabited by Iranun. Landas Family came in Davao in 1912, they have also many descendant in the region. Datu Tomas Camdan of Bacaca Elrio migrated in Davao in 1931 and sprang out also many descendants. Iranun as International Tribe. History tell us, Iranun of Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia were came from Philippines. During ancient time, Muslim leaders had already established Diplomatic Link to its neighboring countries. Sultan of Brunei, Amay Pakpak of Lanano, Sultan Kiram of Julo and Sultan Kudarat of Cotabato were observing diplomatic relation. Narrated by Sultan Umbay Tuan Bacarat Arumpac the third descendant of Ayunandatu sa Lumbak a Lupa (Ruler of Central Mindanao) according to Sultan Arumpac during the colonizing attack of Dutch and Spaniards to the Sultan of Brunei, He asked assistance from Sultan Kudarat. The later send him 6 big ships full of armed men to Brunei and fortunately they were able to depend Brunei from invaders. When the leaders decided to restore in the Philippines, Sultan of Brunei stopped them and instead he gave them a portion of His Kingdom and until now Iranun resides therein. In fact the present parliamentary speaker of Malaysia is an Iranun in the name of Hon. Dr. Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Hadji Mulia. Dr. Pandikar often visited his relative in Supangan Sultan Kudarat. The Homeland of Iranun. Why Bangsa Iranun / Iranun tribe – not much heard or popular to Davao. The existence in the Davao areas of Iranuns were not much heard aforetimes due to their peaceful living, and at times because they were being unjustly assimilated to the other, ethno-linguistic groups, specifically their Maranao and Maguindanaon brethren whom they are closely related by dialects, attires, cultures, but whom they are ethnically distinct and distinguishable. They also described as great defenders of home land, the simplest, friendly to all tribes, easy to satisfy. (Madali Makuntento) do not involved in politics to escape from troubles or disputes. When the Iranun came and a certain place, he first look the Muslim place of worship the (Mosque) church and use to reside thereby regardless of whom tribe belong that Mosque. Unlike Maranao and Maguindanao wherein they obliged themselves to provide their own Mosque, that is the reason why we have only few Mosques in Davao and Iranun can found anywhere in the city. The first involvement of Iranun to politics in Davao Hon. Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Carpio was the only mayor supported by the Iranun Tribe during her mayoral candidacy in 2010. Davao united Iranun Tribe Pledged their support to the candidacy of Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and their appeal is to recognized their tribe when she assume the office of City Mayor in 2010. It was headed by their president DATU PAMIKIRIN LATIP PAGALUNGAN “PJ” ARUMPAC JR. AYUNANDATU the third generation of Ayunandatu of Central Mindanao. They wanted to recognized since they were behind from other tribe for many years. They cannot avail the privileges and programs given to the other ethnics. For instance, The Hadj (the pilgrimage to Mecca) a yearly program of Duterte’s administration, wherein only for those 5 recognized Muslim tribes. Their long dream is to recognized their ethnic and appoint their deputy mayor or representative to addressed the concerned of the government and to avail all privileges given to other constituents. Iranun is also predominantly and legitimate tribe of Davao. We also contributed a lot to the development of Davao. We are paying taxes like other residence of the City. Iranun has many establishments like El Bajada Hotel, DAP Restaurant and Lodging House, Midvalley Taxi, Jaime Taxi, Tanglay Security Agency and many more are owned and operated by Iranun. We have also many company and government employees. The present Assistant Regional Director of B.I.R. 11 is an Iranun. They are all paying taxes to the City government of Davao. Fortunately, when Hon. Inday Sara Duterte assumed the office of City Mayor, she recognized the tribe as City’s 11th Tribe in August 8, 2011. That was the first time we included to the Hadj Program and given half budget to the 2011 Kadayawan Festival. This was a legacy of Hon. Inday Sara, amo kining utang kabubut-on nga dili giyod makalimtan. Our finally and last appeal is the appointment of our deputy mayor or representative and we hope she will appoint soon before the end of her term. Iranun Population – estimated 1.6 million all over Philippines 4,000 to 5,000 in Davao City Iranun – Language Iranun language is accepted as medium of communication in Mindanao. It is understandable to the other tribes especially Maranao and Maguindanaon. The language used in Darangan, like Bantugan is iranun. This is the popular epic of Mindanao.First local translation of Quran in the Philippines is in Iranun version. Attire – Cultural attire of Iranun was taken from Chinese women. Iranun is the original users of Tubao and Kopya. Sports - Sipah, Chess Board, Dama, Depo and Play Cards of Tarumpo. Dance – Sagayan, Bamboo Dance, Singkil Dance Song – Darangan, Onor, Mamayog etc. Kampilan or Sword – Iranun being the descendant of Bantugan, they are master of using Kapilan or Swords.
