BE WARY OF YOUR EXCUSES I’m affectionately known as “Mr. Simple” in the world of Personal and Professional development. Why? Because Actors (and many others) make things difficult when they don’t need to. Today, I want to address one of the most common ways Actors derail their careers. It is by making EXCUSES. What is an excuse? Essentially, it is a way to release ourselves from an obligation—an obligation to fulfill our own promise as actors. Excuses keep us at a distance from our dreams and goals. How do they do this? They do it by creating a gap between where we are right now and where we want to be by keeping our dreams just far enough out of reach that we struggle unnecessarily. THE MOST COMMON EXCUSES After talking to Actors around the country and taking a hard look in the mirror at my own excuses the following list makes up the most common excuses I hear: 1. I’m not good enough 2. I’m not worthy 3. I don’t have the money 4. I don’t have the time 5. I’m afraid of failure 6. I’m afraid of success 7. Others are more talented than me 8. I can’t take rejection 9. I procrastinate 10. I don’t like the “business” end of Acting 11. I don’t have enough training 12. I don’t know what to do 13. It’s just the way I am 14. I’m easily distracted 15. I’m not pretty or handsome enough Do any of these feel familiar to you? Do you have any more to add to the list? Here’s the interesting thing about excuse making. We can actually believe they are true because we’ve repeated them to ourselves for so long that they’ve become an actual BELIEF. Now, here’s the irony—the only thing that makes them true is that we believe them. We buy into them as true and as such—THEY ARE TRUE FOR US. Let me repeat this. The ONLY thing that makes your excuses true is that you believe them. Why do you believe them? Because you don’t stop to investigate them—to see the absurdity and the “lie” they really are--we just allow them to take over and believe them to be true. It’s the subtle difference between YOUR reality and ACTUAL reality. You see, our negative realities are often based on the “lies” we tell ourselves—about ourselves (I’m not worthy). Really? You’re not worthy? That’s one of the biggest lies of all and you know it. I’m asking you right now—to stop and investigate your own excuses because in essence—they are a pile of you know what and all they do is keep you stuck, frustrated and spinning in circles. Are you ready to hear that? If so, you can put an end to your excuses right now. A SIMPLE TOOL You may be thinking, “Wait David, I don’t have the money I want IS real” or “I DO procrastinate,” Ok. I get that but here’s the point. These are NOT valid excuses just because they exist in your world. They exist because YOU keep them alive by continually creating it for yourself! Stop creating it and it won’t exist anymore! To investigate your excuses do the following: 1. Ask yourself, “What story do I continually tell myself?” (i.e. I’m not good enough) 2. Ask, “Is it undeniably true?” (you will find the majority of your excuses simply aren’t true) 3. If it is true (i.e. don’t have the money), Ask, “Why do I continually create this for myself?” 4. Decide what steps you are going to take to stop living with the lies and/or begin creating something new PS.
