BE the judge ICC witness 604 now says his Church Pastor told him to recant evidence incriminating DP William Ruto. On Tuesday, September 09, 2014, the witness who was being cross-examined by prosecuting counsel Anton Steynberg testified through video link from an undisclosed location in Nairobi that he was advised by his priest to confess that he had falsely accused Deputy President William Ruto of instigating the 2008 post-election violence. In his earlier statement recorded with the ICC investigators in July, the witness claimed to have attended four meetings at which Mr Ruto incited Kalenjins against the Kikuyu in the North Rift ahead of the 2007 General Election. the witness who comes from Turbo in Eldoret has denied having attended any of those meetings, saying he had fabricated the narrative to link both Ruto and Sang to the chaos. He now claims he falsely implicated Ruto because he hated him. He said he also made false allegations against Ruto and Sang after being promised a comfortable livelihood outside Kenya and free education for his children.The witness said he did not tell his lawyer that he had discussed the matter with his priest. He said after learning that he had been summoned, he decided to voluntarily go to court to testify. I wanted to come and tell the court the truth, he added.
