EXCLUSIVE: Alan Pardews got six games to prove himself, says former Newcastle hero That is the shock verdict of former Magpies star Warren Barton who reckons the St James Park faithful will pile on the pressure if their team suffers a dodgy start to the season. Pardew came under fire last term after the Tynesiders endured a miserable campaign - in which they finished tenth - with angry supporters constantly protesting and calling for the managers head. “When I was there we had Alan Shearer, Rob Lee, Gary Speed and Shay Given to help the younger players coming through. I dont think theyve got that now.” Warren Barton But owner Mike Ashley has stuck with the former West Ham boss and the club have recruited six new players ahead of the big kick-off. Yet Toon hero Barton believes there are not enough characters in the squad to fire them up when the going gets tough. He said: I think Alan has got maybe five or six games and then the pressure will start to mount again. They have gone into the transfer market and bought good players but I know what the St James fans are like. They want top-class players. They have gone so far with the French influence. If its going well its perfect, if it doesnt then you start getting problems. But I dont think theyve got a character in there that can really lift them. I dont think theyve got that now. I think as soon as they get off that bus they are going in different directions and theyre not together as a team. When its going well its easy - its when its not that you really need leadership.
