BEATING THE RED WITHOUT A FAIRY GOD MOTHER By Brighton Musaidzi We met her right in the middle of Joina City; a little latter than fashionably late. Who can blame her? She is a model and for the worse parts a Zimbo. We could tell that she did not have the etiquettes and elegance of a model or the snobbishness of a celebrity. Maybe it because Nicole Mpepoimba; as beautiful as she might be; isn’t much of a model yet! I should admit; my partner was a little on the skeptic side about her being a model and all, but who could blame him. Nicole is a bit (ok! A lot) below average model height, but hey nothing a shoe rack filled with heels can’t fix; right? And besides she had a model friend; on whose foot I stepped on just to add some drama and a pinch of awkwardness to the whole meet up. Since this was a short notice interview, she couldn’t feed the journo (for reason best known to her ignorance of the ‘feed the journo’ unwritten rule) so we avoided the food courts and opted for a quieter internet café for the recording (notebooks are so two thousand and late). So until recently Nicole was just a waitress at the Rainbow Tower in the capital (like every model story). The former Dominican Convent High student said she has always wanted to be model but had never really put that as an achievable possibility until recently when she caught the eye of a local agent. When asked about her role model, answered (pause… sigh) Tyra Banks (I know, right?). I guess she was able to see beyond the giant fore head and the fact that Tyra is a two months old baby taller than her; which could be viewed as a good quality! I would have love to pitch Nicole’s story as a snobby Cinderella cut; but she is not at all half that. Incredibly humble and chatty (to my journalistic delight), she exuberates the fresh breath of a new age Zennist model, different from the norm. Not that the normal 21st century model isn’t cool, Nicole manages to be different which makes her cool, really cool. Though she is still a newbie in the industry, she has already experienced the bloody fighting in the industry and the shady modelitics (modeling and politics… dumb dumb); and though it is not much to write about her current move to her current agency was facilitated by a revelation about these modelitics. I know most of you are thinking tell me something I don’t know, but please cut her some slack she still new! However the fact that she is comes from a humble Glennorah background and that she is a bit on the disadvantaged side of modeling (specifications wise) this does not on the easier much more sympathetic road to fame on the ramp and pages of magazines. In fact I find myself feeling pity for her beautiful and seemingly talented bottom and her giant dreams; because it is more difficult for her. I get to a point where I could get her-own ‘fairy god mother’ to guide and offer her a bit of magic along the way, but it’s her bravery and clear cut gut ( which have been the best recipe for any rising star) that will take her places. Do you think she has what it takes? Let the future be the judge, I’ll write and be a snob about it!
