BEAUTIFUL Korumburra Korumburra is located 117 km south-east of Melbourne on the South Gippsland Highway First settled around 1845 Korumburra is now the service centre for the surrounding dairy and beef cattle industry as well as a tourist attraction bought on by its original beginnings as a black coal mining town in the late 1800s. There are conflicting reports as to the year that coal was discovered but coal mining peaked in Korumburra in the 1890s around the time when the railroad reached the town. In 1974 the local historical society who were keen to preserve Korumburras history established the local tourist attraction of Coal Creek Historical Village which is an authentic recreation of a mining town containing many restored buildings and mining equipment from the Korumburra area. The last black coal mine operating in the Korumburra area closed in 1958.
