BEDC ELECTRIC POWER SITUATION IN BENIN CITY. The competence of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) is currently under test. The breakdown of one of the main distribution transformers, which is responsible for the current load-shedding being experienced in Benin City puts to question the competence of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to transmit steady power to its consumers. When the top engineers in the know suggested that the best option at the moment is to purchase a new transformer to replace the faulty one while repairs are being carried out on the transformer, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Chief Executive Officer (Mrs. Funke Osibodu) asked them how much the zone generates that would warrant a replacement of the faulty transformer? This singular decision of Mrs. Funke Osibodu to opt for repairs rather than outright replacement of the transformer has plunged Benin City into darkness with power now been rationed in three hours on, three hours off basis. At times, other faulty equipment means that power in some areas would be off for more than the three hours scheduled. The repair of the faulty transmission transformer which is currently being carried out in Lagos, if successful, would take at least three months to complete. Now, what is the rationale behind deliberately keeping people in darkness while the sum of N750 is being collected monthly for service-charge apart from the units consumed, with some establishments like banks paying more than N250,000 monthly on estimated charges? The concern of CrimeView on this matter, apart from the people paying money for services not rendered is that we have also uncovered that criminals are now able to plan operations at night as they are able to know when power would be put off in various parts of the city. They are able to operate in the cover of darkness, by taking advantage of the power outages. It is important for Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to quickly replace the faulty transformer while repair of the faulty transformer is ongoing to ensure that adequate power in available to consumers who pay bills with their hard earned money. It would be the best option if a backup transformer is on ground for a quick swap in times of emergency like this.
