Russias short term strategy vis a vis Ukraine is beginning to emerge. As per the story below, it appears that what they will likely try to do is split Ukraine up, with the more Russified areas either being annexed directly or through an intervening transition process which they cynically call federalism. Look to Russia to foment reasons to intervene, particularly in Crimea and in eastern Ukraine, specifically Donetsk and Luhansk, and perhaps a few other oblasts. The game is afoot, and Ukrainians better be prepared to respond with concrete actions to the likely provocations that will occur in the coming weeks and months. The EU and the US also better have their plans and responses set as Russia embarks on Empire version 2.0.
