BEES: I run my mouth a lot on Facebook, and I am far from the most guilty one. Thats my way of opening by saying a lot on this medium is simply bad manners and the electronic equivalent of bad breath. But tonight I do have an issue -- a serious one -- to put before this entire community. Its about the birds and the bees -- the ones that make mother earth happy. Twice this year I have encountered something I have never stumbled across before. About two months ago, my wife and I discovered a mound of vibrating bees, collected into a swarm in a tree just outside our bathroom window. We worked diligently, and we found a bee-keeper, who came and trapped that set of bees. Heres where it gets serious: Bees pollinate our world. They make veggies and fruits possible, which means the less bees, the less tomatoes, the fewer flowers, a lot less things that look good, smell good, taste good, improve our lives. This week, a neighbor down the street found a much smaller swarm of bees in a tree along the sidewalk. Cool guy, he alerted his neighbors and posted signs warning that walking nearby invited an encounter with bees. Last fall, we saw the same thing occurring where we go to exercise. Question: Do you know what to do if you encounter a bunch of stinging, rather unhappy insects that are the cornerstone of our world? We did google searches and we found groups that actually would come out and SAVE the bees. We worry that others, who may be more hurried or hassled or threatened, might be more expedient and adopt actions that would destroy the bees. Dont. Rather, please dont. Bees, like lizards and frogs and toads, are treasures in this days world. Thanks.
