BEHIND THE SCENES: The indefatigable Peter Dreier, who spoke last - TopicsExpress

BEHIND THE SCENES: The indefatigable Peter Dreier, who spoke last Saturday at Allendale as part of our program on Bayard Rustin, has written an excellent article, posted today on Truthout, which recounts the drama that took place behind the scenes of the 1963 March on Washington regarding the speech to be delivered by John Lewis. Then 23 years old, Lewis was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the civil rights movement’s radical youth wing. Parts of his speech were considered inflammatory, and March organizers were concerned that it might threaten the unity that they had so carefully nurtured for the event. Dreier also details Lewis’s remarkable life story, from his birth into a family of Alabama sharecroppers to his evolution as a courageous leader of the civil rights movement.
