BEING A PRESS TEXT BY NASARAWA STATE IN A SAFE HAND GROUP, CONDEMNING THE MOVE BY THE NASARAWA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TO IMPEACHED GOVERNOR UMARU TANKO AL-MAKURA DESPITE HIS UNPRECEDENTED RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENTS AND GOOD GOVERNANCE It is pertinent to put on record that the emergence of His Excellency, Umaru Tanko Al-makura, as the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State was a mass movement by the people of the state who took to their collective destinies into their hands to realize their dream for a change for common wealth and collective prosperity. Let me also remind us all that the citizenry was well aware that the process of change has no easy historical antecedents. Haven survived years of deceit and underdevelopment, they are still committed to the principle of change, which usher in the administration of Governor Al-makura. On this Accord we stand. Nasarawa seems to be a state in denial of its basic nature and history. But until we come to a realization of whom we are and tell ourselves the truth about our stage of development, we may continue running round the circle. Yes, the stage of our development is the product of the extant stage of the development of our minds. The change project of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura, is not only a vision but a philosophy that should be imbibed as a culture by every well-meaning Nasarawa state citizen especially giving the complex history of the evolution and the development of the state since creation. It is on this regard that; Nasarawa State Now in a Safe Hand Group wants to use this medium to call on our House of Assembly members not to act against the wish of the people of Nasarawa state. Instead, the members should join forces with Governor Al-makura in moving the state forward. We again want to use this medium to call on the state Assembly members to please promote understanding, harmony and reconciliation through mutual respect between the three arms of government. Unity is a fundamental principle of existence. It is often said that it is very easy to break a broom stick and impossible to break a bunch of brooms. If a single snake moves towards a group of people seated, they would get it easily killed, but if a hundred snakes were to move towards the same group, everybody will take to his heels. This underscores the need for unity, understanding and respect among the three arms of government irrespective of religion and party difference. Our state is blessed with many energetic and intelligent young men and women. We have more graduate and undergraduate. How to use them for the development of our dear state should be the priority of the Assembly members and not “impeachment”. Let unite and fight against all forces of division. Nasarawa state is the only state we can call ours, we must do what is needed to be done to make it greater and better. As members of House of Assembly, and as a people representing people of faith in God from different religious perspective, one thing to believe is that; God will protect the government that stands for justice even if the government has less majority of the House. God is not a religion or a political bigot. God is not a male chauvinist. God is not an ethnocentric tribalist. God is not the oppressor of anyone. God is with those who care; those who want for others those things they want for themselves. One tendency for people who claim to follow a religion is to slide into the position of believing that you are better than the others. The House of Assembly is overestimating its’ virtues and underestimating the goodness in others. The tendency is for the House to become spiritually arrogant; to forget that others are people like them. There is always a tension between representing your constituencies, your religious communities or your ethnic communities or your political parties, and your loyalty to the virtues and values and teachings of your religion even those lofty ideals of your ethnic groups. It is our prayers that the state Assembly members will try and ensure that the spiritual strength they have in them will keep them from not getting angry and not allowing their bitterness from others to make them sail from justice. It is in this vein that as a concern citizens of Nasarawa state from our respective local government and Development Areas of the state condemn the impeachment move by the state Assembly. Not because the Governor is Muslim, not because the Governor is a Gwandara man, not because the Governor is from the Southern zone of the state and not because the Governor is an APC. But because the Governor is a human being, because the Governor is God fearing above all, because the Governor is working and Nasarawa state is changing positively. We all own Nasarawa state. We belong here, and we all have the right to self-determination. We should respect that right and do unto others what we will do unto ourselves. Ultimately we all visitors to this planet. From God we come and to God we return. As members of House of Assembly, and as a people representing people, you are there in brotherhood, as brothers and friends to solve the common problem of our state, which is development and not as adversaries. As a people representing people, you are there against the exploitation of religion and party sentiments. You are there against stereotyping, stigmatizing and dehumanizing. You are there against the use of party as a political decoy and as a distraction from the critical things that bedevil our state. We pray that at the end of this trying time, we will all grow in our humanity and respect for each other. Finally, we want to use this medium to call on the good people of Nasarawa state, not to be distracted by the selfish and corrupt politicians whose only desire in attaining leadership positions is self-enrichment. While we commends the good Nasarawa public for not allowing themselves to be swayed by the detractors of the Al-makura’s government for it would be a disservice to all, and the future of the unborn generation should we allow the hungry politicians voted out of office in the last elections to find their way into leadership positions. Because it is clear from their past records they do not have any good intention for the state. Long live Nasarawa State Long live Ta’al Comrade Abdulrahman Andoma Ahmad Coordinator-General, Nasarawa State in a Safe Hand Group
