BELIEF - that which you are taught and then accept as truth. You can, however, also question and even reject the teachings. Or like a parrot or a Pavlov dog you can simply accept them and believe. KNOWLEDGE - that which is gained through experience. You can only be knowledgeable on a subject through dedicated study, but this often implies that you have to accept certain facts as the indisputable truth. Inherent knowledge - say for instance that of a mechanic or a dentist or any scientist, artist etc - comes with years of practice and dedication. A sculptor can gain full knowledge of a specific medium such as bronze or marble and how to obtain the best results with it only by means of testing and trying and eventual triumph. I believe that grass is green because I was taught that this specific colour is called green, but I still cant define colour in scientific detail. Therefore I dont believe in God. I discard everything I was taught about God. Because, you see, I KNOW God. Through various experiences which are perhaps too intimate to divulge I know God. Yet I can also not define God. Not fully. Not yet. But it is a remarkable awakening to know. To gain knowledge not based on tenets and dogmas and doctrines and several dos and donts, but on experience and inner research and introspection. God, Bette Midler, is not watching from a distance. God is not without. God is within.
