BENALLA TABLE TENNIS:- Kookaburras swoop on Owls (BE) After winning their first three matches of the season, Owls surrendered top spot on the ladder when they went down to Kookaburras 3-2 in round four of the Benalla Table Tennis Club’s pennant competition last week. Although top player John Bajada was impressive in accounting for both singles matchups, Owls were outplayed by a more polished Kookaburras unit. Jarrad Kelly won a singles in straight sets before combining with Rob Erskine for a straight sets doubles victory to level the score at 2-2. The deciding singles was a tense affair, with Erskine losing the first game before fighting back for a 17-21, 21-10, 21-18 victory over Michelle Feldtmann, to take the points for Kookaburras. In another close encounter, Wombats overcame a slow start to edge out Plovers for a 3-2 victory. Stuart Smith and Adrian Squires gave a spectacular display to win a singles each in hard fought matches. They teamed well to win doubles in a tight three-setter. Brian Harrington was the player of the match, showing his class to win both singles in straight sets for Plovers. A fired-up Wallabies outplayed Possums to enjoy a 4-1 victory in a high standard match. Charlie Boyd impressed by winning both singles in tight matches and was awarded player of the match. He was well supported by Mick Kelly who won a singles in a superb performance, before joining with Boyd to take a hard fought-doubles victory. Rosellas outclassed an out-of-form Taipans unit, going through for a 4-1 victory. Bruce Forster stamped his authority on the match by winning both singles in a great performance. He was well supported by Paul Larkin who played well to account for a singles after dropping the first round singles to a hungry Lee Horan. They went on to easily win the doubles in straight sets. B-grade Frogs had to fight hard to hold out Eagles, recording a solid 5-0 victory. Phil Howard and Gil Smith used all their experience to ensure the team got over the line, winning all their matches in a fine display. Gliders were too strong for Bullants, playing well for a 5-0 victory with Bruce Linke easily winning all his singles. Meanwhile, Henning Aretz produced his best performance this season, playing some magnificent shots to lead Numbats to an impressive 4-1 victory over Echidnas. He comfortably won both his singles and then teamed up to take the doubles in three sets. Redbacks showed great determination to hold out Mozzies for a 3-2 victory. Geoff Wallis and Kieran Linke played well to win a singles each, before taking doubles in straight sets. Dean Bajada starred for Mozzies, accounting for both singles in straight sets. C-grade A defiant Hawks outfit held on for a 3-2 victory in a hard fought affair. Jake Howard was in good form, taking both singles in style. He had good support from Carol Chay, who teamed well with Howard to wrap up the match with a strong straight sets doubles win. A magnificent performance from Beth Grant enabled Magpies to hold on for a 3-2 victory against Koalas. She played exceptionally well to win both singles in straight sets. She then joined with team-mate Ann Degan for a tense doubles victory to seal the match. Falcons’ junior team of Jack McNulty and Coby Linke were too strong for Crickets, recording an impressive 5-0 victory. They won all their matches and have shown great improvement in their games this season.
