BENEFITS OF CUMIN: (Cuminum cyminum): Jeeraka (Skt), Jeera (Hin.), Jeerakam (Mal.) Sanskrit Synonyms: Jarana, Ajaji, Kana, Dirghakiraka. Rasa (Taste): Pungent and Bitter Virya (Potency): Hot Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Pungent Guna (Quality): Dry and Light Karma (Action): Reduces Vata (Wind) and Kapha (Phlegm), increases Pitta (Bile), increases digestive fire Cumin is a very useful herb and condiment in Indian cooking especially and is seen in most curries, especially Potatoes and enhances their taste, being a great digestive herb. It is good for conditions such as vomiting, and increases tastes, decreases fever and is good for the eyes and is anti-inflammatory, as well as stimulating to the uterus and nervous system and can also be used for leucorrhea, skin diseases, hiccup, cough and bronchitis, as also abdominal tumours and all Vata (gaseous) disorders. 1-2 grams of Cumin can be mixed along with jaggery for fever. For diarrhea, it can be mixed with Curd, and for the heart, it can be taken with grape-juice; for vomiting or nausea during pregnancy , sugar can be added along with Cumin and taken. For vomiting in children, Cumin can be fried, powdered and given to them along with honey.
