BET is all about celebrating achievements, in the entertainment - TopicsExpress

BET is all about celebrating achievements, in the entertainment industry, by black people. With this understanding, I find it preposterous that no musician from either Africa and/or the Caribbean is given the chance to perform at BET awards, and this ends up being a black American award show! While BET does a good job in having an African category and artistes such as Diamond, Davido among others making up the star studded list, it seems BET is ashamed of presenting the award to the eventual winner on live television. Why is this the case? Could it be that Americans of color are afraid of their contemporaries from Africa? Would the ratings go down if an African is seen on live television receiving an award? The existing bias does not just end with the presentation of the awards. African artistes should also be given the chance to perform at the awards ceremony, in the same way Lil Wayne, Usher and others get the opportunity. African artistes have come of age and must therefore be recognized for who they are and the achievements they have realized. BET should remember that Africa is home to over 1 billion people and mis using African artistes by having them attend these awards to just be part of statistics would not help tap to this fan base. It would be good to see famed artistes like Lionel Richie, John Legend, Busta Rhymes, Nicky Minaj, Beyoncé and others gyrate to Davidos Skelewu or have Snoop Dog sing along Diamonds Nataka Kulewa (in this case to some weed). #BETAwards2014
