BEWARE- ANGELS WALK AMONG US - A TRUE STORY Published: May 24, 2010 in the local newspaper To the Editor: We took the Grandmoms to a belated Mothers Day lunch on May 10, 2010. Dad - of the quadruple bypass surgery - chauffeured both his mother - of the recent hip surgery with walker - and his brother with cervical collar using an arm brace for stability due to his not-so-distant hip replacement. Favorite son (OK, our only son) drove me and his maternal grandmother with her oxygen tank and walker, which were safely stowed in the back seat - the oxygen tank and walker, not the grandmother. Our first choice restaurant was closed because of a Monday holiday, I guess. So another favorite restaurant beckoned just a few miles away. The late lunch crowd should have thinned out by now. Yes, the parking lot was practically empty, so handling the two walkers and oxygen tank with grandmother attached was not so difficult. I donned my respirator to navigate the chemical fumes coming from passing traffic. Taken together, I guess we looked like escapees from the local physical therapy rehab facility. After everyone was seated and various hardware stored safely out of the aisle, the very kind waitress took our orders and later served our meals with great courtesy. We were enjoying our Mothers Day outing even though a day late. Dad the chauffeur asked for the check. No charge, said the young waitress. The young man who had been sitting near your group paid for all your meals!!! NO!!! A stranger picked up our check?? Yes, it was true! Who was the young, blond man with the light orange T-shirt? The sunlight was shining very brightly so we only saw him from a distance as his shrimp and fries arrived. We paid no further attention. The light coming from his direction was so bright, I could not look his way for very long. Who was the stranger? Dad the chauffeur thought of the movie Pay It Forward, while record-collecting son said maybe he was a biker. But there was not a motorcycle in sight. I said it must be a musician with the famous celebrities rumored to be moving into the area. Who else could afford to pay for six meals for total strangers? Be on the lookout. An angel walks among us. This is one Mothers Day we will never forget and a tale we will tell every Mothers Day. This happened at Roman Delight Restaurant on Route 61 in Orwigsburg, Pa. Vaya con Dios blond-haired young man with the orange T-shirt, We will always think of you as an angel in our midst. Elaine Jerry Tomko
