BEYOND THE SEASON OF CROSS-CARPETING AND THE NEW FOUND ROMANCE BETWEEN ALI MODU SHERIFF AND PDP - MY CONCERNS: Ali Modu Sheriff was indicted in an inquisition regarding the origin of Boko Haram. During that inquisition, a link was draw between Ali Modu Sheriffs armed militia, ECOMOG, which he used to oppress political foes while he was Governor of Borno State and Jamaatu Ahlis Sunna Liddaawati Wal-Jihad (the real name of Boko Haram). He remained a major sponsor of the sect, funding them with State funds, to the extent that the peace which Borno State enjoyed before his coming as Governor, was completely destroyed. At some point in 2009, he fell out with Muhammed Yusuf, the head of the sect and this led to a military onslaught on the group and thereafter, other political opportunists adopted the group and the group morphed into a terror organisation, accounting for the death of over 30 thousand people from 2009 till date. Ali Modu Sheriff has not been tried, rather, he is about to be decorated with the PDP badge. In preparation for the canonisation of Ali Modu Sheriff as a saint by PDP, Maiduguri Airport which was hitherto closed, was opened for him and he touched down in Borno State to the warm embrace of PDP stalwarts. INSTEAD OF ISOLATING THE MODU SHERIFF ISSUE, LETS CONTEXTUALIZE IT: POLITICS IN NIGERIA IS BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE AN ECOSYSTEM FOR CORRUPTION Beyond the Ali Modu Sheriff cross-carpeting issue, politics in Nigeria has being about expedience and not values. That is why a Tom Ikimi who was the spokesperson of the Abacha regime while it was emasculating and annihilating the Civil Society and terrorising the rest of the Nigerian citizenry will come out to proclaim himself a democrat and not stopping there, he will emerge as a leader among supposed progressives in the APC; that is also why an Ayo Fayose who was indicted in a corrupt poultry project and standing trial as a suspect in the deaths of Fasuba (the brother of the former Ado Ekiti Local Government Chairman) and Ayo Daramola (a former governorship aspirant) will be allowed to contest under the banner of the PDP. POLITICS OF EXPEDIENCE RATHER THAN POLITICS OF ETHICS AND GOOD CONSCIENCE: WHERE WILL IT LEAD US? At a time when the Chibok girls are still in the firm grips of Boko Haram and at a time when Maiduguri, Damaturu, Potiskum, Jos, Kankara, Gamboru, Chibok, Kala-Balge, Kano, Abuja and a host of other Nigerian towns seems to be under the Boko Haram onslaught, we are celebrating one of the exponents of this devilish enterprise - Ali Modu Sheriff, while leaving important issues of state unattended to. Truth is, corruption is not a sustainable enterprise and it soon comes to hurt those perpetuating it. WE HAVE SEEN COUNTLESS CASES OF NATIONS WITH POTENTIAL, GOING TO ROTS BECAUSE OF DYSFUNCTIONAL VALUES - remember Somalia, remember Zaire, remember Haiti under Papa Doc and Baby Doc? I hope Nigeria is not following in this stead? I remember that the Greeks invented democracy but with this ugly trend of canonizing politicians who are unable to account for their shady past just because they cross-carpeted from the PDP to the APC or from the APC to the PDP, I am beginning to wonder who invented politics, because I cannot make sense of the Nigerian version; at least not as yet! paparazzipress.ng/cover/the-truth-at-last-ali-modu-sheriff-s-alleged-confession-how-we-sponsor-boko-haram
