In the April 15th edition of Inside Higher Ed a disturbing statistic was posted that all of us should be concerned about. In the article, Allie Grasgreen states that on average one counseling staff member is available for every 1,772 students over the course of one school year. Then in the May edition of Harper’s Magazine we read that 50 percent of college students exhibiting symptoms of depression are not accessing the mental health services they need. Given these troubling statistics it is not surprising that Ms. Grasgreen states that the highest percentage of students getting the help they need is found at smaller colleges. Regardless of the college the student is committing to or planning on applying to, parents should ask about the mental health services offered. Going off to college is anxious enough without adding another worry to the mix.
