BFAR 02 encourages youths to help conserve fishery resources TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan- Part of the strategic goal of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to be successful in its aim to promote sustainable fishery resources here is by tapping the youths to help campaign for the proper management, conservation and preservation of its aquatic and fishery resources. This October, as the said bureau together with its stakeholders and partner agencies commemorate the 51st fish Conservation Week Celebration, BFAR started to conduct a massive Information Education Campaign (IEC) among students in secondary schools in the region. Said IEC aims to expose the youths to the real and critical situation faced by the aquatic resources with the changing weather condition and with the human activities like their irresistible used of illegal fishing methods such as electrofishing, fine mesh net fishing, blast fishing, muro- ami, and others. This year’s IEC is focused on the concept of “FISH is LIFE”, wherein LIFE means Livelihood, Income, Future Generation, and Ecological Stability, which relates to the programs and projects of BFAR. Also included in the campaign is the dissemination of the scope of the new law, BFAR Administrative Circular (BAC) 247, which aims to salvage the diminishing number of Ludong in Northern Luzon. With the number of youths educated during the activity, the fisheries bureau is optimistic that it will succeed in its movement to conserve the remaining resources to achieve fish sufficiency level and food security of the whole valley. IEC activity is conducted yearly during Fish Conservation Week Celebration. This year, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizacaya, and Quirino set-off to push this activity until October 31.
