#BHP is refusing to allow Central #Queensland locals the opportunity to work in its two newest Bowen Basin #mines. Caval Ridge and Daunia have a compulsory 100% #FIFO policy – only employing permanent workers from Brisbane and Cairns. This policy locks out workers from all Central Queensland regional cities and local towns like Moranbah, just kilometres from the mines. It also denies freedom of choice for FIFO workers so they can choose to have their families move closer to where they work in regional Queensland. If Central Queenslanders want to work in the mines, they have to leave their families and fly to Brisbane or Cairns at the beginning and end of every shift roster. While at work they must stay in camps on the fringes of towns throughout their work roster even if their families live close by. At the same time, if workers from Brisbane or Cairns want to live closer to work and move with their families to local towns, they aren’t allowed. BHP’s policy: #Discriminates against locals Denies #freedom of choice to all workers and FIFO families Undermines Central Queensland #communities Already a number of towns have had populations decrease to the point where local businesses cant survive. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Our research shows that employing local workers would deliver millions to the hard hit regional economy. With job cuts hitting mineworkers across Queensland, giant multinationals like BHP should be finding ways to give them work – not lock them out of it.
