BIG NEWS IN EDUCATION: The President Proposes to Make Community College Free for Responsible Students for 2 Years!!! Yesterday in an online video, President Obama announced an exciting community college proposal that he will explain in more detail today at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee. America’s College Promise is a historic opportunity for our nation that will benefit nearly nine million students by making a higher education more affordable and improving the quality of education across America’s 1,100 plus community colleges. The proposal would allow students to attend community colleges tuition-free if they attend half-time, are making satisfactory academic progress to a degree and maintain a 2.5 GPA. To be eligible, community colleges would have to pledge to make their programs’ credits transfer to four-year institutions or lead to jobs in fields in demand, and states must commit to continuing existing commitments to higher education as well as provide a match to the federal grant.
