BIG STEP FORWARD for indigenous girls and women! A new study from UNICEF highlights violence against girls and women from indigenous communities around the world. The study, called “Breaking the Silence on Violence against Indigenous Girls, Adolescents and Young Women”, describes how women and girls from marginalized communities pay the highest price of all, with higher risks for exploitation, abuse, and even slavery. Jessica Vega Ortega, an indigenous activist, had the following to say: “The fact that we are recognizing and talking about the violence against women and indigenous girls is a big step forward. For us, the term ‘violence’ is very significant because we suffer much violence, especially exclusion, poverty, and migration. We are exposed and discriminated for speaking our language, we are ignored or not listened to – in my opinion, that is violence. We are afraid to express ourselves in our language. We are afraid of being humiliated and abused. There is violence inside the community and from people outside our community who are taking what belong to us.” Read more here: unicef.org/protection/57929_69532.html
