BIMSTEC Summit!!!! The Bay Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, or BIMSTEC summit took place at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. The BIMSTEC leaders signed off on a declaration expressing satisfaction at enhanced regional cooperation, and setting up a permanent secretariat in Dhaka. Sumith Nakandala, Sri Lanka’s former deputy high commissioner stationed in Chennai, will serve as the organisation’s first secretary-general. Indian PM Dr. Singh said that though the region faced common challenges from natural disasters and terrorism, it also shared many opportunities for trade, economic cooperation and connectivity. “Today, as connectivity and integration across a fragmented Asia are becoming the new vehicles for advancing peace and prosperity in the region, BIMSTEC is one of the more promising examples of such initiatives,” the Prime Minister said.
