BJP hits out at Omar, PDP: Bahartiya Janta Party (BJP) on Monday asked the National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress to refrain from bringing disrepute to the JK institutions. Reacting to the statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that “PDP has purchased JK newspapers and these have unleashed propaganda against NC,” the BJP’s Kashmir spokesman Khaild Jehangir in a statement here said, “History stands testimony to the fact that newspapers in JK have always reported facts. Editors and journalists have maintained highest standards of journalism and have always sided with the truth.” Jehangir said, “Blaming newspapers for indulging in propaganda is unacceptable. During the past five and half years newspapers have played a vital role in highlighting the development carried out by the government. As elections are approaching National Conference, PDP and Congress are indulging in gimmicks to mislead the people.” He cautioned the ruling party to refrain from targeting the fourth estate for “highlighting the failures” of the government. “Media is duty bound to act as a watchdog and highlight such issues which government fails to address. Omar sahib should see to it that the public issues highlighted by media are sorted out rather than making it a personal issue,” he added. Taking a dig at the Peoples Democratic Party leader for maligning JK Bank’s image Jehangir said, “A former bureaucrat turned PDP leader in the recent past tried to malign the image of Jammu and Kashmir Bank which has the distinction of being JK’s pride.” “It is unfortunate that PDP leader tried to score points over NC by politicizing JK Bank. The JK Bank has played a pivotal role in shaping JK’s economy and nobody would be allowed to castigate it for vested interests,” Jehangir said. He said NC, PDP and Congress in coming days would indulge in “politicking” to divert the attention of the masses from real issues. “People have matured politically and they cannot be misled by indulging in rhetoric,” Jehangir added. He said BJP is committed to protect the JK institutions and won’t allow anyone to malign these for their political interests.
