BLACK PAST PHOTO OF THE DAY: How many of you remember the 2007 movie The Great Debaters, directed by and starting Danzel Washington? Considered a biopic period drama, The Great Debaters revolves around the remarkable efforts of real-life Wiley College (Marshall, TX) debate coach, Melvin B. Tolson. Under Tolsons direction, the Wiley College debate team competed against historically black colleges and universities, but earned national attention in 1935 with a stunning defeat of the reigning national debate champion, Southern California University. Born in 1898 in Moberly, Missouri, Tolson was also a significant African American poet who in 1947 was appointed Poet Laureate of Liberia.
