BOOING OF AKPABIO AND UDOM, HOW HONOURABLE? I wasn’t at Asan - TopicsExpress

BOOING OF AKPABIO AND UDOM, HOW HONOURABLE? I wasn’t at Asan Ibibio during the coronation ceremony of Uyio Ikpaisong Ibibio, but media reportage has it that the representatives of Akwa Ibom State Governor and SSG were booed. Many out of subjectivity, on hearing the news jubilated while others frowned. Both positions being heavily coloured by political undertones; thus, numbing their minds of objectivity. Now that the euphoria of emotions have sublimated, I wish to draw our attention to some salient issues in relation to the event. Did the organizers of the event deliberately invite these dignitaries for ridicule? Taking cognizance of the personalities in this group, I’m of the opinion that they won’t do such a thing. In addition, the reportage also vindicated them by succinctly stating that they tried to calm the dissenting voices but to no avail. My aim is not to trace a line to the engineers of the booing or those that acted the script, but to establish the moral justification of such action. Was such action honourable? Was it only the persons of Akpabio and Udom that were ridiculed or the offices of the Governor and SSG that were ridiculed; the institution of Government? Doesn’t the game of politics have rules? Is it morally right to establish that in the game of politics any weapon can be hurled at our opponents not minding the moral damage it will cause on the society in the long run? Is it true that as long as our immediate, selfish and myopic interests and ego are satisfied, any weapon is fair? If we end up destroying the institution we should hold in high reverence is there any future particularly for those who aspire to occupy such offices tomorrow, and our society at large? Will it be wisdom as a child to jump and celebrate when the news of someone beating up my father reaches me, simply because my father hurt me? I call all right thinking Akwa Ibomites, especially the media to publicly criticize this moral decadence in our society. As an Ibibio son I also respectfully request our Monarchs, to please make amends if the action in anywhere caused damage to the offices of the Governor and the SSG. Politics should not decide the moral issues of the day but our conscience. We should be careful to establish principles that are morally right so that we don’t end up throwing away a child in search of snails. Thank you!
