BOT News - July 2013 As Term 2 comes to a close I’d like to add my congratulations to our Gleniti students for all the amazing things they’ve achieved recently – and my thanks to all of the teachers and parents who made it possible!! At this months board meeting we received an interim National Standards report on reading, writing and maths. There was a lot of discussion about how we are going as well as what National Standards mean. The fact that assessments are made by a mixture of testing, classroom work and teacher judgment means the results aren’t necessarily comparable between schools. They are a snapshot in time and can be useful to monitor progress but there is also a lot more to primary school than just these 3 areas of the curriculum. You will receive individual National Standards assessments for your own children as part of their mid-year report and I would encourage you to speak with their classroom teacher if you have any questions about National Standards. We have received quotes from architects for the refurbishment of rooms 5-8 and the next stage will be to come up with some concept drawings for the upgrade. The Ministry of Education requires that schools, where possible create Modern Learning Environments (MLE’s). This refers to not only the layout or the classroom but also to the way in which students learn. This refurbishment is an opportunity for us to make some ‘core’ changes, such as upgrading the lighting, the acoustics and the air flow. There are also ‘advanced’ changes – which would mean changing physical aspects of a classroom that can help to create a more ideal learning space for students. Learning environments that cater to 21st century education models differ greatly from the ‘traditional’ look of school classrooms so watch this space. We also took the opportunity to thank Danny Sisson for the 3 years he spent on the board and for the time he put into both the Property and Health and Safety portfolios. As promised last month here are profiles of two more of our new board members. Happy holidays everyone. regards Rebecca Dobbs Chairperson Ph 686 3081 [email protected]
