BRAZILIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS Almost 143 million Brazilians - TopicsExpress

BRAZILIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS Almost 143 million Brazilians will vote to elect a new President of the Federative Republic of Brazil this Sunday, 5th October, 2014. Voters in Brazil will also vote to renew the Federal Congress, one third of the Federal Senate, and Governors and State Assemblies of all 26 States and the Federal District. The number of registered voters outside of Brazil this year is 337,168, which is 68.2% more than in the 2010 elections. Voters abroad can only vote on the Presidential elections and polling stations will be available in all Brazilian Embassies and Consulates. Federal and State elections take place every four years. Voting will take place at the Embassy of Brazil in Kingston between the hours of 8.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on October 5th, 2014, for the 47 registered Brazilian voters from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The current President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, will be running for re-election for the Workers Party (PT). Her main opponents will be ex-Senator Marina Silva, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), and Senator Aécio Neves, of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). There are also eight other candidates from smaller parties running for President: Eduardo Jorge (PV), Eymael (PSDC), Levy Fidelix (PRTB), Luciana Genro (PSOL), Mauro Iasi (PCB), Pastor Everaldo (PSC), Rui Costa Pimenta (PCO) and Zé Maria (PSTU). In 1996, the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) introduced electronic voting, using an electronic urn, a Brazilian invention. First used in municipal elections in 57 municipalities of the country with more than 200 thousand voters, in the year 2000 electronic voting was used in the entire country in all polling stations and nowadays in all Brazilian diplomatic and consular representations. The Brazilian electronic voting system has been a success and has been presented as a model in other countries. While the electronic voting system is considered, by candidates and voters, to be trustworthy, a number of other control measures are put in place by the TSE and by State Electoral Courts, both in Brazil and abroad, to ensure a faithful, accountable and speedy registration of electoral results. It is expected that by Wednesday, October 8, the official result of this election will be finalized for all positions in dispute. In the case of the Presidential election, as well as for Governors, if no candidate reaches 50% plus one of the valid votes, a second round with the two runner-ups will be held on October 26th. If a voter, who is still not familiar with the equipment, wishes to learn how to use the electronic urn and how to vote for President as they would on Election Day, they can click on the following site to carry out the simulation. tse.jus.br/eleicoes/eleicoes-2014/simulador-devotacao/simulador-eleicao-2014-exterior
