BREAK-INS TO GARAGES Tayside Division is appealing to residents living in Dundee and Birkhill to think about their home security following a number of recent break-ins and attempted break-ins to garages. A total of six garages have been targeted by thieves in Clinkerheel Drive, John Huband Drive, Keithall Gardens, Turniehall Gardens and Chestnut Green areas of Birkhill. Five garages were also targeted in Hawthorn Grove, Ballumbie Castle Estate area of Dundee. Two motorcyles, three mountain bikes, a camcorder, two watches, a Sky box, a wedding photo album and hair straighteners were amongst items stolen. Residents should make their garages and outbuildings as secure as possible, with the aim of preventing crime. It is common for people to store expensive goods and equipment in their garages and outbuildings – which is precisely why they should take the security of these buildings every bit as seriously as they would for the family home. Security measures that can assist with crime prevention include - · For visibility at night, consider sensor-operated lighting as a convenient and an effective deterrent. · Security mark all equipment with the relevant postcode to increase the likelihood of it being returned if stolen and then subsequently recovered. Marking should be obvious, where possible, although an ultra violet pen can be used for more discreet marking. · Consider an intruder alarm for the garage or outbuilding. · NEVER leave the garage or outbuilding unlocked. Anyone who has information regarding the thefts from the garages can contact Tayside Division on 101.
