At the time, Cobham was only making an appearance as a special guest and was not a Tama endorser. The event also featured performances by current Tama artists Simon Phillips (Toto, Pete Townshend, The Who), Charlie Benante Fan Page (Anthrax), Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, Adrenaline Mob, Dream Theater) George Spanky McCurdy (Lady Gaga, Kanye West), Matt Garstka (Animals As Leaders) Billy Rymer (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Rayford Griffin (Jean-Luc Ponty), Ronald Bruner Jr. (SUICIDAL TENDENCIES - OFFICIAL, Wayne Shorter), Blake Richardson (Between The Buried And Me), and John Blackwell (Prince, Justin Timberlake). Former Tama artist Lenny White also performed and Stewart Copeland of The Police was also on hand to give a speech. Ever since garnering attention in the early 1970s as a founding member of the The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham has devoted himself to his craft. He has pushed the conventional boundaries of our instrument by arranging toms and cymbals in a less than standard configuration. He also was one of the first drummers to employ more than two bass drums and play with an open stance (left side ride/left hand on the hi-hat, right hand on the snare). As a drummer, Cobhams powerful and complex style of drumming has exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion. Throughout his career, Billy Cobham has influenced countless drummers with his innovative style and technique. Without his contributions to drumming, we would not have drummers like Simon Phillips, Terry Bozzio Official (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons), and Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band). Terry Bozzio has even said, Billy Cobham is still the most physically impressive and dynamic drummer I have ever seen. If youve ever witnessed Cobham behind his kit then you know exactly what Terry is talking about. Billy Cobham was recently voted one of The 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine.
