BRISBANE QUEER FILM FESTIVAL 2014 February the 3rd, 2014. By: Andrew Shaw Source: GayNewsNetwork.au The recent launch of the Brisbane Queer Film Festival 2014 sees some fresh ideas an initiatives under the guidance of new festival producer Troy Armstrong. A 20th anniversary screening of The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, special appearances by Olympian Matthew Mitcham and Jake Harrison (My Kitchen Rules) all feature at this year’s festival. BQFF 2014 features new events such as Camp Out (a new 12-hr marathon screening where participants sleep in the Powerhouse Theatre), a closing night party, special Q&As after films and the annual Queer Aussie Shorts program, where audiences can vote for their favourite film. Armstrong says BQFF2014 is “about celebrating love in all forms”. “We’ve got documentaries, dramas, thrillers and a fantastic selection of new events designed to welcome everyone in the LGBTIQ community,” Armstrong says. This year’s festival opens March 28 with Out in the Line-Up, about gay surfers, followed by the Love Shack Beach Party Opening Night Party on the roof. Elsewhere in the festival, In Their Room: London by US filmmaker Travis Mathews features men talking about their lives as they get ready for a casual hook up, featuring emotional and physical nudity. Mathews’ collaboraton with actor James Franco, Interior. Leather Bar, a reimagining of ‘lost’ S&M footage from the 1980 Al Pacino film Cruising set in New Yorks gay scene, is also part of this year’s program, as is a new doco about Divine, I Am Divine. There’s also a nod to queer screen history: a screening of the 1961 British film Victim, starring Dirk Bogarde, and the first film ever to show a gay man as a victim of society’s hypocrisy. BQFF 2014, Brisbane Powerhouse, March 28 - April 5.
