BRYANT FIRE UPDATE: The Bryant Fire started last Thursday on private timberlands southeast of Klamath Falls, and sough of Bonanza. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but the fire did start in an area where a logging operation was ongoing. The fire is under command of the Oregon Department of Forestry. This morning the fire is 15 percent contained and has burned 1327 acres. The fire had active behavior yesterday, but the activity was diminished compared to Thursdays and Fridays activity. Yesterday crews finally began to make head way on attacking the fire directly. Bulldozers are going be able to make good progress on getting the roads in the area tied into making a containment perimeter of the fire. Hand crews will be working on direct frontal attack of the fire as conditions allow. Air tankers and helicopters are supporting the attack and the efforts of their crews yesterday did help stop the spread of the fire on the west side of the fire. The plan today will be to attack the south end of the fire which is where the best potential for growth is. If winds do not push the fire today, they hope to get a line established there. But, even without winds, there will be warmer air temps and reduction in humidity which will help increase fire activity. Air attack will concentrate on the south end of the fire as long as conditions allow. There is no estimated date for full containment yet. Very favorable weather conditions are expected to arrive on Thursday, but wind could be an issue again on Wednesday. The fire is being fought by 35 hand crews, 51 engines, 25 water tenders, 6 bulldozers, 8 helicopters, 3 heavy air tankers, and 2 single engine air tankers, or SEATS. In addition to the resources committed through the State of Oregon and the Forest Service and BLM under mutual aid, the timberland owner has hand crews, engines, water tenders, and bulldozers assisting. I do not have numbers of those resources, but know they are actively participating in the fight against the fire. The timberland owner is better prepared than some to fight fires and has resources at their disposal. Because of that, they are not having to use as many resources to fight this fire as would normally be the case. That is freeing up resources to fight other fires that may start elsewhere in Oregon.
