I know its a bit corny and passe, but Im going to take the opportunity presented by the occasion to say that Im truly grateful to my friends. It seems like Ive had the outrageous good fortune to become friends with people that Im not only simpatico with, but who are good, decent people. As every year goes by, that seems more and more important. Im also thankful to have had acquaintances grow into friends over the past year. Many people that Ive come to know fairly recently have grown in importance in my life and I appreciate their being there. Most importantly, Im tremendously appreciative of my family. Ive always been in a situation where Im often the odd man out when it comes to family. I actually LIKE my relatives. I would like them if I wasnt related to them. I didnt have any dysfunctional childhood, I didnt have any kooky aunt or uncle that was ranted about conspiracies and ruined every holiday. I didnt have parents or older siblings that tortured me. So many of my friends, from childhood to now, have had complicated and conflicted relationships with their families. Ive been spared that. I have a family that I love and respect and who treat me better than I deserve. I should probably say that more often.
